>:( We have just returned from the Montana Independent Film Festival where our documentary Butterflies screened. This festival is such a joke and it has nothing to do with any of the festival we have attended so far. The very small town of Missoula would be a great place for a tiny independent film festival, but they would need to know about it first. The festival founder put absolutely no work into letting anyone know that films are being screened and was "very sick" during the whole 2 da …

from working both on festivals and with filmmakers for festivals, if the festival is small, don't waste your time on a press kit. The small festivals don't offer press rooms anyway. Reach out to the local media where the festival is by sending them press releases or email or phone call. Tell them you are part of the festival and if they are covering the event, you would love to participate in the article and you have production still jpgs to send. Postcards and business cards are a must. You …

I can give one reason for this. There should be a barrier to entry so that only the reasonably serious filmmaker participates. If entry was free, submissions would consist of any idiot with a camcorder. Festivals don't really depend on submission fees to make their money and that is why some do have free submission fees, but the level of quality goes down if it is too easy to submit.

Two days ago a film festival organizer yelled at me for being too lazy and not showing up to their awards ceremony. Here is how it went: The festival is the Action on Film International Film Festival (http://www.aoffest.com/), for which I paid an entry fee of $35. They operate in a strange way: The only phone number listed is only a machine, no one behind it ever. They never sign any emails with names or numbers or contact info. They are very vague on their emails and website, which is not up …

The most incredible, inspiring, fun, positive festival experience I've ever had by a long shot has to have been the Jackson Hole Film Festival in Wyoming. Firstly all involved with the festival were beyond friendly, energetic, professional and a joy to communicate with. They were very respectful of the filmmakers. (I had a short there and I've felt less than respected at some other festivals in the past). We arrived in JH the day of the festival. As we drove into Jackson, we were awe stru …

The 2006 Sarasota Film Festival was a great experience: free airfare, free hotel for three nights, filmmaker lounge lavishly stocked with great food and drinks, and a private driver to take me anywhere I wanted to go! Add to this great screening venues, enthusiastic crowds, lively post-screening Q&As, and a diverse line-up of Hollywood, foreign and independent films. All festivals should be like this!

Seriously! I was 0 for 20 with my film. Then it hit. I'm now at 25+ acceptances at good fests, several audience awards, many many sold out and encore shows, etc. Programmers can be elitists, some stupid, some plain wrong. They ARE human after all. But sometimes they are right. If you keep getting rejected there's a probably a good reason. I know I made some drastic cuts to my film after I started submitting, and now cringe when I think of some of the early submissions I sent. Don't send …

A few years back, I took part in a filmmaking initiative called Project NORMA. Don't ask me why it was called that, the organisers didn't know. The idea was to make a film based around one of seven themes, in seven different genres and filmed in seven different locations. And you chose them out of a hat. I got Circe, as a horror, in a park or farm. I'm not going to go into the filming, just I delievered a 5 minute short horror. It was added to the others and the premiere event was h …
