I co-produced a film with the above (or would that be below) commenter. Just wanted to add that they did pay for our hotel stay. Which was not given to all filmmakers, so was very honored to have them pick up our tab. We made the feature length movie for 5k so maybe they knew that we were broke.

The Festival director and the volunteers were very nice and helpful. They had an after party at an art venue that was a little awkward and stuffy. Not the best after party I have been to. But some festivals didn’t even offer any sort of networking parties.

They have a merchandise area where you can drop off DVDs and Tshirts and they will sell them for you. Hassle free. Which was very nice. They had a green room with drinks and food, not every festival does that.

They only give awards to Lake Michigan Film Competition so if you are looking to get some awards for your film take that into consideration. The award ceremony was okay, nothing fancy. Pretty small.

The location is centralized so all the films play in the same building instead of having to walk all over the place or drive to different venues. Glad they changed it from March Madness weekend. With Michigan State being such a big basketball school I was curious as to why they did that in the first place.

I have to admit, I thought the festival was a “3” until we won an award. Yes, that changed my perception of the festival significantly because we left the festival on such a hi note because of it. But I just wanted to mention that before getting into my actual review.

When I attended this festival in March of 2009, I wasn’t really in awe of it. I thought it was decent. Decent turn out, despite it being college basketball season and both the Michigan State mens and womens basketball teams were playing. They have since moved the festival to the fall, so maybe that helps.

Our screening, which took place in a film class room, had about 50-60 people in attendance. Like I said, it was okay. They had a lot of films playing around the same time (plus the basketball games to compete with), so I was a little disappointed but I completely understand.

I do reccommend this festival if your film was made in IL, MI, WI, or IN to take part in the Lake Michigan Film Competition.

All in all, it was a good festival. Winning the award made me give it a 4 instead of a 3.
