I attended the Seville European Film Festival in 2014 with a short. Seville is a beautiful city and thank god I made friends on Couchsurfing because otherwise it would have been a really lonely week.

The festival could only pay for two night’s hotel, which is great, and better than nothing. But I got the impression the hotel lobby was the only real social zone, so if you weren’t staying at the hotel you really had no chance to meet other filmmakers. Also almost everyone there seemed to be Spanish, which might have been cool if I had had the opportunity to socialize with them enough to get past the language barrier.

Also I thought it was a bit stingy when I realized that all the feature filmmakers got food tickets for nearby restaurants but I didn’t. They don’t show a lot of shorts, so it could have been that I fell through the cracks, but still, it would have been nice.

One film I attended that was supposed to have English subtitles didn’t, and there was no announcement about it before or after, and I couldn’t even find someone from the festival after to ask about it.
Most of the screenings seemed to have a great attendance, except, sadly, the shorts program my film was in. I got to see some interesting features I may not have seen otherwise.

I would say this festival is great to attend if you’re Spanish, and if you can afford the hotel the whole week. Otherwise, skip attending.
