    Dear Aitken,

    How are you doing?

I am having one of those lazy evenings, so I was pondering about all the
festivals in the past year. (I have to go to Berlin than to Szczecin,
Poland, I am opening festival there with “Unplugged” next week, and I
don’t really feel like going at all.) It feels all the same. Then I
    remembered Madeira Film Festival.

I must say, without any doubt, that you have one of the best festivals
around. It is very fency, but small, which is not very common. Everybody
is close, but nobody is pushy, it is all relaxed and polite, with common
touch. And then there is almost punk feel to it. Really cool.

I was planning not to travel for work in next months at all, but I still
have few big ones left (DOK Leipzig, and so on), which I can’t miss, and
then occasional few of these special invitations like Poland. And then
my next film will be ready.

So it is a never-ending adventure, but only few places stand out. Your
event is one of those. For no particular reason, I just wanted to let
    you know what I think.

Say hi to amazing Isabel from me!

The most filmmaker friendly film festival I’ve encountered yet…and I’ve encountered many. I can’t image it can get much better! Madeira is an island paradise, the folks who run the festival – Aitken, Isabel, Elsa and the gang were all accommodating and friendly, and bent over backwards to make all filmmakers feel comfortable and welcome. We were all treated to a brilliant tour of the Laurissilva Forest, the preservation of which is one of the primary reasons the festival exists. Rather than present the festival as a competition, all filmmakers become Ambassadors of the forest! The fact that the Madeira Wine Company was one of the sponsors didn’t hurt, for after every screening we were offered a bevy of different wines to savor. The parties, the events, the restaurants, the accommodations – all first class.

I can only hope that you and your film are as lucky as I was to be accepted.
