    Overall, an excellent experience.

I got off to a rough start. I submitted through without a box and very quickly my submission showed up as “accepted” for the festival. (This was several months ahead of the notification date). I tried contacting them through their web site to verify the acceptance, but never heard back from them. I think the problem was with an older web site that wasn’t forwarding messages properly.

About a month ahead of the festival, I was able to make contact with the festival director through Facebook. He was apologetic for the difficulties with the web site and he answered all my questions quickly. He even gave me his personal cell number “just in case”. From this point on, my experience with the festival was nothing short of excellent.

The festival was well run. Except for the opening night screening in one venue, everything ran precisely on time. There were enough volunteers to get the work done and all that I talked to seemed genuinely interested in independent, local film.

There are four venues within easy walking distance of each other around a traditional Texas “courthouse square”. And a festival HQ with drinks and places to sit and relax. There were social events each evening and I had a good opportunity to connect with other film makers from around the country.

Each film screen twice over the weekend and each film maker is given a few minutes immediately after each screening to talk to the audience. The audience was very open to my film and interested in discussing the details. The local press was even on hand to talk with the visiting “Celebrities” .

This is not a festival to attend if you are trying to get exposure to Hollywood distributors. But if you are looking to get your film in front of an honest audience and see how it plays, this festival gives you that and a fun, laid back, weekend to boot.

I’ll be there again next year.

(Disclaimer) My film “Pursued” won the award for Best Short Film of the festival.
